When looking at marble statues it never came to mind the amount of thus artist have to take into consideration before creating the piece. For example, how fragile the marble might be, how resistant is it to changing whether climates (is it going to be indoor or outdoor?), or how far will the marble extend so that their vision is able to come to life. The artist starts forming the piece with clay to get a visual start of what they visualized. Once they've made any finishing touches plaster is applied to help preserve the piece. This was an educational film and I learned a lot about the hardwork that sculpting requires. I found the video to be inspirational and I now have a greater appreciation for the art of sculpting, and the individulas who decide to persure this craft.

Who knew glass was made from sand? Yet it has different properties than sand. Making glass is a long process that includes using fire to strengthen its properties. Its not a true solid and stiffens when cool. Cementation is a technique used to stain (paint) glasses that are often seen in church or cathedral windows. Ceramics on the other hand, is made from a clay base that uses fire to help its structure as well. After putting the clay base in the fire it cools;then crystalline structures appear on it, which gives ceramics their hardness and resistance. The temperature in which it's fired and quality of raw materials used to make the ceramics has an influence on the organization of the reformed crystals, which in turn determines the quality of the product. Firing is the most important step because it determines the final characteristics of the product. Dry pressing is used to make tiles and plates, then glazing is what gives them their aesthetic and function.
Glass in architecture:
Glass has a wide range of functions but is preferred to be used in architecture where it is increasingly replacing wood and stone. Reflective glass windows are commonly used in air conditioned office buildings because of their solar and thermal insulation properties. Laminated glass is safer among children because it doesn't shatter. I always wondered how the more "plastic" feeling glass the didn't shatter was made and this video gave me insight on that.
