1. Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail. This is a narrative art style painting. An oil painting. 2. What processes were used to create this work? What social influences might the artist be responding to and why? He responded to the impact war had on a certain area, he even  eliminated any elements of  color because he felt color would distract from the impact of the painting. 3. What is the relationship of this work to the time and society in which it was created? Describe the symbols used to express this relationship. The title Guernica  refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war.  4. Identify elements in the work that evoke a persuasive or emotional response. Be specific about what those responses are and why. Based o...

Reflection

1 . What were you expectations for this course and where they met? My expectations were to learn how to apply analytic/interpretive/reflective processes to contemporary and historical visual culture. Develop familiarity with visual art venues, how they function, and the roles they play in community, and to investigate art-related technologies & visual arts through research using traditional and/or electronic resources. My expecations were met.  2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting? I still feel that art is form of self expression. 3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so? After visiting the Murakami exhibit at the Albright Knox he is now one of my favorites because his art is so eye catching and his style is truly unique and ...

Mask making

Image
Me I chose my mas costumes( carnival costumes) as inspiration because they are filled with so much color and detail I thought it would be fun to make a mask inspired by their colors. I'm from the Caribbean so it's common for us to get dressed up like this and basically have one big party outside with loud music food and people. I took colors from each of the costumes, even from my step sister's costume(the purple one) to color in the mask. We don't usually wear masks with our costumes but usually really extravagant or small and detailed head pieces; so i thought why not switch it up. I used shape, color, texture, and line to create my mask. My frien had a mask alreay made with what seemed like a smooth plastic texture which is why the mask looks glossy. I also used rhinestones, glitter, and a gold sharpie to color it in. I free handed my design and I'm pretty happy with how it came out.
Video: African Art In the villages of sub-Saharan Africa, art was a part of their daily lives. The video explores the symbolism, aesthetics, and functionality of African art through majority of their lives through sculpture, masks, architecture, ornaments, clothing, and utensils. Most forms of art such as masks were important to use in traditional African rituals. In addition, indigenous African religious beliefs are explored through rituals, a spiritual form of performance art. Many masks and statues were once used in ceremonies the combined artistic sounds with music and dance. Many of the costume items were made from wood and straw because they deteriorate in hotter climates. Engraved pictures of animals in stone called rock art was presented. Not only were animals represented, humans were as well and their interactions with each other. Video: African Art: Legacy of Oppression In the Congo region, there are more than 250 different cultures, so there is a broad range of artistic styl...

Exploring Line

Image
I used a pencil to draw both of my hands, i then traced them with marker. Using my less doinant hand wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but i felt I was able to make small details like my finger shapes more visible with my dominant hand. I would try to use my less dominant hand to create art in the future, sinve its less structured than forming letters to write. I'm interested to see what I would come up with.
